"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win"- Mohandas Gandhi

This quote by Mohandas Gandhi had a major impact in my life. What I think this quote means, is that no matter how difficult life can be, I'm still faced with two choices. I can give up and let my fears of failure win, or I can prove to myself that even though I fear failure, I can still make it in life. This is something I've always had trouble coping with since childhood. I would runaway from everything when life seemed to start getting rough. I had to learn the hard way that life is only going to get more complicated, and if I will have to learn to deal with it. For example, when I found out that I wasn't graduating high school on time, I thought about dropping out, and giving up. I felt like a faliure not only to myself, but I felt like I let everyone who loved me down. So what I stopped going to school for a while, and when the unthinkable happen, I snapped out of it. My mother was hospitalized after suffering a "silent heart attack", as the doctors called it. At first I felt that not going to school and staying by her side was the right thing to do, but when my family needed help paying with the medical expenses, I knew that I had to do something to help out. I started to look for a job, but no place would hire me, because I didn't have a high school diploma, and the only job that did hire me was a supermarket, in my neighborhood, that really didn't pay well. I knew that I couldn't go on that way, so I had a talk with my sisters. They simply told me, to try harder at my job, and maybe they would gave me a raise, but deep down I knew that it wouldn't happen. So I did what I knew how to do best, I ran from the situation as usual. Now the thing is, that I've always been a reader, books were my escape from reality, but in this case I was on the computer looking for another job. Then I came across this website with a listing of jobs, and on the top of the page, they had this amazing Gandhi quote. I realized kind of late that it was black history month, and they had quotes of inspiration by famous african american leaders. It took me a while to understand why they had this particualr quote but, it open my eyes up. This quote wasn't just there for show, it was there because although the site was for job openings, it was a way for the people in charge of this site to say "there are oppertunities out there for you". So I knew that the only way I could help out around, is to finish high school, go to college and get a job that payed well. So I went to the Board Of Education, and I found myself applying to Edward A. Reynolds West Side High School. Now I'm finishing my senior year, and by January 2011, I will finally get my high school diploma, and prove to everyone that not only were they wrong about me, but to prove to my family and myself that I can make it in life.
